an EXTREMELY IMPORTANT QUESTION OF GREAT IMPORTANCE.
So [info] - personaljai and I are watching Star Trek (um, again, stfu), and I have a question for those of you who are better at time travel than I am:

At the beginning of the movie, Kirk Sr flies his starship into the Big Bad Tentacled Ship of Doom and goes kablooey. The rescue pods fly off and are rescued, as evidenced by the fact that Kirk Jr winds up in Iowa. Twenty-five years later, Kirk Jr. meets the Big Bad Tentacled Ship of Doom again, and finds it in one piece.

HOW DOES THAT EVEN WORK? Like, okay, fine, maybe a huge fucking ship + twenty-five years to put up a fresh coat of paint = a ship that is not a total shitheap, fine. OKAY. I don't really get it, but fine.

But how the hell does Starfleet never, like. GO AND LOOK FOR THE SHIP WITH THE TENTACLES? I mean, I wouldn't want to, but that is because I am not freaking STARFLEET. Clearly they had the technology to scoop up bb!kirk and his momma and, y'know, presumably some other people as well. How did they not ever try to look for the Big Bad?

Possibly this gets explained in better detail later on, and we're just not remembering it—plus, as Jai pointed out, space is BIG—but still. EXPLAIN EXPLANATIONS, STAR TREK.

In other news, [info] - personaljai is the BEST GIRLFRIEND EVER you are all so jealous.

EXCELLENT. QUESTION. I found a lot of the premise V. V. CONFUSING.

I mean, it was time travel, so I paid careful attention, but that just seemed...weird. Although [info]ladysorka gives a very compelling explanation, so. yay?

Kirk says when he's expositioning about the lightning storm in space (giant hands moment) that the Romulan ship was never seen again. I would guess that the ship was ok enough to limp off (maybe in warp?) before the starfleet rescue crew got there.

but this isn't science! this is LOGIC. like, isn't it pretty self-evident that it's better all around if you KNOW WHERE THE BIG BAD BE-TENTACLED SPACESHIP IS? *sigh*

To try and go to an actual makes sense place, here, the Romulan ship was from a place in the future where they had higher warp speeds - it's possible the ship could even go to 10, which none of the Federation ships of the time could. They'd also know a lot of worlds/cultures not actually known to the Federation yet (the Federation was still in a relatively small part of the Alpha quandrant during this period, if I remember right). Hell, for all we know, they went over and used the wormhole by Bajor and hung out in the Gamma quadrant for a couple decades.

Edit: Which, actually, if they did, could explain why the Federation knew the Cardassians, which they shouldn't have yet, given that the wormhole would've either been in or on the edge of Cardassian space then.

Yeah, okay, I'm a nerd.

oh! that...actually makes a lot of sense! I hadn't considered the technology differential involved, not to mention the extent-of-exploration thing. Go figure!

And, yes, you are a nerd, but I approve! Nerds are the best.
